Sam and her partners’ kitchen was in need of an overhaul. It was dated and did not reflect their current taste. The clients knew their style - retro and wanted to the new kitchen design to reflect this. They wanted greater storage and openness as well as more light.

Being entertainers they needed storage for wine and a preparation area away from the main kitchen where dirty dishes and glasses could be kept out of site during gatherings with family and friends.

The Client Brief

The home owners have a love for all things retro. They wanted to incorporate the boldness of black and soften it with a contrast of pale grey.

The owners’ other main focus was a versatile kitchen. For them, being able to have a walk around island bench and butler’s pantry, was the key to a practical and attractive looking kitchen.

The Challenge

Ensuring that there was enough natural light to in order to contrast against the colour selection, ensuring it did not further darken the space.

The Design Solution

Black gloss doors were and complemented by a Caesarstone Night Sky benchtop. Both colours met the clients brief for a retro style kitchen. Matte finish taps, lighting, sinks and chairs were added to support the overall retro theme.

A window splashback was added to increase the light flowing through the area. Bifold windows backing onto the outdoor area served to further support the entry of light into the kitchen as well as bringing the outside in. The previous seperate outdoor area was now integrated with the kitchen.

A wine rack was added to the side of the preparation bench to store their wine collection. It also
added a point of interest.

We added a butler’s pantry, that hid all the bulky appliances and was also able to serve as a full
laundry and wash up area as well. This ensured that our clients could hide away unsightly dishes
whilst entertaining.

Other key elements to the kitchen are a built-in coffee machine, induction exhaust fan & cooktop, push close doors, slow close drawers and an eatery that can be used internally and externally. The choice of colours, finishes and products that will withstand long term use.

The Result

A wonderful retro inspired kitchen design our clients love to entertain in. Featuring a large working bench, butlers pantry, built in appliances and an abundance of natural light the Moore family could not be happier. The new bifold window opening onto the patio acts as a server and joins the backyard to the kitchen. A large entertaining space for the ultimate entertainers.
