The Client Brief

Kate and Michael’s kitchen, although renovated, was tired and, as it came with the home, did not reflect their taste and style. It was small. They wanted greater storage, room to move and plenty of space.

The Challenge

Located in the centre of the home, the kitchen acted as a thoroughfare to remaining parts of the home. The existing kitchen enclosed the space and made it look small and dark. Here we needed to increase the space, make it more functional and have it flow seamlessly with the rest of the home.

The Design Solution

By removing overhead cupboards and placing all the storage units on one side, we opened the space up dramatically and allowed light to fill the kitchen.

We also extended the kitchen and made it longer creating more storage and serving space. We used an under-bench oven and cooktop to support the new layout and federation style design. The timber benchtop anchored the white cabinets whilst giving the kitchen unique character and interest.

We added lots of storage for Kate and Michael – a huge pantry and wine storage strategically hidden from little prying eyes. They have an impressive 7 metres of workable benchspace. We also included a return so that the family could have breakfast or simply somewhere to sit while their favourite meals were being made.

The Shaker-style door and with bespoke handles matched Kate and Michael’s style and was in keeping with their federation home.

The Result

Michael and Kate love their kitchen, even several years after we created it for them. They now have space to move and prepare meals, together with lots of storage for their growing family. They’ve mentioned that when friends and family visit, the space no longer feels crowded and messy with a place for everything.
