The Client Brief

Our delightful Glebe client had a kitchen,  bathroom and laundry that were old, tired and needed renovation. He wanted renovated spaces designed for more modern living with greater storage and functionality. He felt his current kitchen was small and a little cramped and hoped a solution could be devised to create more space. A hidden laundry was also part of the brief. 

The Challenge

The limited kitchen footprint meant that we had to be a little more creative with the design aspect of this project. We needed to create enough space for a fully functional kitchen and hidden laundry. The challenge with the bathroom renovation was how best to incorporate the sloping ceiling into the new bathroom layout and transform it into a design feature. 

The Design Solution

When considering the overall kitchen space and our client's needs, it was clear we had to venture outside the kitchen's existing footprint to create a new kitchen design our client would feel comfortable working in. Adjoining the kitchen were stairs to the home's upper level, so we converted the unused space to house part of the new kitchen and laundry. This increased the size of the kitchen, and by using the same joinery materials throughout, visually, the understairs kitchen cabinetry and laundry work seamlessly with the main kitchen area. The shower was located underneath the sloped ceiling creating an array of beautiful angles and a point of interest within the bathroom space. 

The Result

A creative and beautifully designed kitchen, laundry and bathroom spaces. The hidden laundry is neatly tucked underneath the stairs, a unique made-to-measure solution using custom joinery. The laundry's custom bi-folds mean the laundry can be kept out of sight when not in use. Using underutilized under-stairs space for kitchen storage and cooking zone resulted in the greater storage our client needed and more counter space for cooking, food prep, washing and casual dining.
