2. Choose your cabinetry wisely

Kitchen cabinets set the stage for your space. Visually, they’re the first thing you notice and form the base of your kitchen design. This means they are doing the heavy lifting when it comes to creating a timeless yet contemporary black kitchen renovation (or any style of kitchen for that matter).  

There are so many cabinetry styles to choose from, including a variety of materials, colours and profiles. Shaker cabinets, featuring recessed panels have a classic, timeless  appeal and have been popular since the 18th century. Shaker cabinets are renowned for  their style adaptability and the simple, clean look they provide (see image above).  

If this style of cabinetry isn’t for you, opt for a more subtle cabinet profile with a matte or stained finish. You can even mix and match your cabinetry. For example, use flat panel doors for your upper cabinetry to achieve a more minimalist feel, and shaker doors for base cabinets to ground the look.

3. Play with texture

It is especially important to incorporate texture when working with a black kitchen design because dark colours absorb light. This can make black kitchens appear flat and harsh. Texture helps to soften a black kitchen by creating more light and dimension.
