Is 2023 the year you’ll transform your kitchen?

If you’re contemplating how to create a timeless space that can serve as the functional hub of your home, we’ve got a few expert tips to help.

When you’re creating a new kitchen design that will withstand the test of time, it might be worth considering current kitchen trends as part of your kitchen renovation planning process.

However, it is important to distinguish design trends that may go out of style, versus trends that strike the perfect balance between creativity and innovation.

In this month’s B&C Home Journal, discover the best 2023 kitchen renovation trends the Balnei & Colina team of kitchen design experts are most in love with to incorporate into your next kitchen renovation.

Enjoy!

1. Slab backsplashes

Slab backsplashes have started stealing the kitchen renovation scene, and we can see why. Their large scale adds depth to any kitchen renovation and the continuity between the benchtop and backsplash feels elegant and clean.

Though the textured look of handmade zellige tiles (glazed handcrafted tiles originally from Morocco) and the classic subway tile still have a place, we can’t deny that we love the look of a grout-free backsplash. Not to mention, they’re hassle-free with easy cleaning and maintenance.

There’s a definite trend towards statement veining with bold, even colourful, patterns in both kitchen benchtops and splashbacks. In the example above, you can see the cool, tone of the backsplash ties in with the pale cabinetry. By using a subtle tone for the cabinetry the splashback and countertop are allowed to shine and make the kitchen renovation cohesive and visually intriguing without being overpowering.

The slab splashback trend can also be used subtly as demonstrated in the Kitchen renovation by Balnei & Colina in the image below. Popular splashback materials include granite, quartz, and, of course, marble. You can choose a more subdued pattern or material and still achieve a high-end look.

2. Mixed metals

Brass fittings have been a leading trend in years past, but in 2023 it’s less about matching your metals and more about mixing them. Brass, gold, nickel, steel or nickel — in 2023 kitchen designers are embracing combinations of all of the above.

In other words, instead of focusing on making your tapware, cabinet handles, light fittings and appliances consistent, this new approach focuses on creating an eye-catching and unique look by using multiple metals.

It’s important to consider how your metal choices work together in your kitchen design scheme. The kitchen design team at Balnei & Colina renovations suggest selecting no more than two to three different metals that have complementary undertones.

For example, brass and gold have warm undertones and couple better with nickel as opposed to chrome which has a cooler undertone. Black metal finishes on the other hand are neutral and can be paired comfortably with any metal finish.

If you’re intrigued by the idea of mixing metals but don’t know where to start, our Balnei & Colina kitchen renovation team can help craft a kitchen that balances your favourite trends with lasting liveability — because a quality kitchen design will always stand the test of time.

3. Dark kitchens are in

White kitchens are universally adored as the chameleons of the design world - after all, they complement almost any home - but dark kitchens (kitchens featuring darker tones) are certainly growing in popularity.

If your style is modern and minimalist or dramatic and romantic, a darker kitchen could be a dream kitchen design decision.

Without much effort involved, black or dark tones make your kitchen feel effortlessly luxurious and chic. The key is adding contrast, playing with texture and choosing cabinetry that won’t go out of style.

4. Statement lighting

When it comes to kitchen lighting trends in 2023, there’s only one rule to know: the bigger, the better.

Your lighting choices have great impact on your space — something homeowners sometimes forget when it comes to their kitchen renovations. Lighting will always need to be practical, but now kitchen designers are embracing that it can be bold and beautiful, too.

Recently, we’ve seen more unique lighting elements make their way into the kitchen. So, instead of keeping your lighting simple and low-key, consider this your permission slip to experiment with more adventurous kitchen lighting selections.

Visually, your feature lighting has the ability to completely transform your kitchen renovation. Imagine the example below without the three spherical lights suspended over the kitchen island. The pendants positively impact the kitchen design by providing a visual point of interest, finishing the overall look by creating balance within the kitchen space.

5. Large islands

Islands are inviting, make your kitchen feel open and on a practical level, give you extra space to prepare meals. Why wouldn’t you want to double their size?

Having a larger island feels casual and less restrictive than a formal dining area — plus, you don’t have to migrate from one room to another to eat and drink. While hosting, you can engage and entertain your guests, without being excluded from the festivities.

Often islands are the key feature of the kitchen and we’re seeing more swathes of bold stone and pops of colour for visual interest. You can opt to match your island to the rest of your kitchen or introduce new materials or variations that create contrast.
