Glass Splashbacks

Glass splashbacks offer a versatile solution as they come in a vast array of colours to suit any kitchen style.  If your after a more contemporary look then glass is a great option. Sheets of toughened glass are one of the most practical choices, as they are heat and impact resistant, reflect light well and with no grout lines (unlike their tile counterpart) are very easy to clean. 

Neutral shades are, as always, the most popular. Clear glass fades into the background and provides a very subtle no-splashback look. You can also opt to make a statement by selecting bold colours, sparkling finishes, mirrored, matte or metallic effects or you can even have artwork mounted behind the glass.

Design Tip: Use a clear glass splashback to assist with functionality. An example may include wanting to keep your exposed brickwork as your splashback. Covering it with clear glass will increase functionality with easy cleaning whilst still giving the appearance of an industrial ‘exposed brick’ look.

Tile Splashbacks 

Decorative tiles can transform an ordinary splashback into a beautiful focal point for your kitchen. There is an endless array of style, shapes, colours and patterns to choose from. From subway to Moroccan, a tiled splashback can help define your kitchen. You can even experiment with different coloured grout and different layouts for eg vertical vs herringbone patterns. 

Due to the vast selection of materials and styles tiles are the most versatile of splashback options. Tiles provide the best cost effective option with the opportunity to reflect not only your personality and sense of style but also an easy way to accurately complement your kitchen design theme.

The only drawback is that it can be difficult to keep the grout dirt and stain free.

Design Tip: If your limited by budget concentrate the use of your feature tile in the areas where it will have the most impact visually.

Window splashbacks

One of our favourite trends at the moment is glass window splashbacks. They help bring the outside in and look especially beautiful when they offer a view to a lush garden or a wall of green beyond. 

A window splashback will allow more light to flow through your kitchen and further open up your kitchen space. It is an easy to clean option that adds plenty of natural light and brightens up your kitchen work space.

Mirrored Splashbacks

A mirrored splashback will add a touch of glamour to any kitchen. Ideal for small spaces, a mirrored splashback can bring much needed light into a kitchen and with it’s reflective properties, can make a space feel larger or reflect an outside view. 

Similar in pricing to a glass splashback a mirror splashback is another clever option for your splashback short list.

The only downside is this option would need a fair amount of regular cleaning in order to keep the surface free from grease, smudged and dust particles.

Stone Splashbacks

No other kitchen material says luxury and high-end quite as well as a beautiful stone splashback. 

Natural stone, like Marble, creates a timeless feel, especially when paired with matching benchtops. It goes well with everything from contemporary to more traditional style kitchens. It’s more expensive that tiles and glass but the effect is simply beautiful. 

Committing to natural stone surface does come with maintenance. Regular sealing is recommended as acidic food substances can stain if left to sit for even a small period of time. It is also prone to scratching. In general natural stone tends to wear and patina with age which is not necessarily a negative if you like the weathered look.
