All-white kitchens are enduring and timeless, but a kitchen design that explores a little colour can feel more personalised and entirely unique. With a custom kitchen design by Balnei & Colina renovations, you have the opportunity to create a space that reflects your style, whether you prefer subtle neutrals or boldly saturated hues.

Coloured cabinetry is proving to be a popular direction for many new kitchen renovations. However, colour isn't only injected into a kitchen via the custom cabinetry. Statement benchtops, splashbacks and brightly hued appliances or fittings allow the opportunity to play with colour and add an eye-catching element.

With an overwhelming amount of options to choose from, you may be asking yourself 'how do I add colour to my kitchen renovation?" and wondering where to start. In this month's B&C Home Journal, we share the secrets to mastering colour in a kitchen renovation. Enjoy!

Adding Colour to Your Kitchen Renovation

Design Flow

Look to the rest of your home for kitchen colour inspiration. A visual aesthetic that flows through all the rooms will ensure the entire home feels cohesive and considered. For example, if your home’s colour scheme is predominately muted, soft shades bring that palette into your new kitchen design to create a sense of harmony.

Warm versus cool

All colours have a warm or cool undertone which affects how we perceive the colour. Generally speaking, a colour with a warm undertone will look like it has the slightest hint of red or orange in it, while a cool colour will throw off shades of blue and green. Think about the colour grey; a cool grey will have a blue undertone that makes it look steely, while a warm grey will have a red undertone that makes it look putty or taupe.

Warm colours are cosy and inviting, while cool colours are soothing and calming. When pulling together a colour palette, choose from within the same colour temperature for an easy-on-the-eye look for your kitchen renovation project.

Balance is key

A highly contrasted pop of colour in one area of the kitchen design will create an energised 'wow' factor. In contrast, a more thorough application of one colour (like finishing the walls and cabinets in the same shade) can make a room feel bigger.

Navy, grey and muted shades of green (such as sage) and blue (powder blue) have found popularity as ‘new neutrals’. Punchy colours such as deep raspberry, lush jungle greens and electric blue are bold choices that make a strong style statement in a kitchen renovation.

Timber tones visually ground a space and add an earthy, organic feel. Blonde oak feels fresh, light and Scandinavian or coastal inspired, while rich walnut finishes are the go-to for a masculine mid-century style.

Rounding out the palette

Bring your colour palette together with the finishing touches. Shiny gold and matt black fixtures in minimalistic shapes add a sleek, contemporary look to a kitchen design. Aged brass and copper in traditional and ornamental forms will add a classic element of old-world charm, as seen in popular country-style or Hamptons-style kitchens.

As a general guideline, metallics and surfaces with warm undertones should be matched with warm paint colours, and likewise, cooler-toned surfaces and their matched paint colours for a balanced kitchen design.

Colour pops

Wondering how to choose kitchen colours for your kitchen renovation without splashing rainbow hues on every surface? If you would like to keep your custom kitchen design mostly neutral with a dash of highlight colour, consider the following:

  • Choose an accent colour for your kitchen island. A contrasting colour will make a statement, create a focal point and add a bespoke feel to your kitchen renovation project.
  • Create a two-toned look on your cabinetry by adding lower cabinets in a feature colour. Choosing a darker colour on the bottom cabinets and lighter for the uppers will help to make the space feel open and airy.
  • Add colourful appliances, accessories and furniture, such as a coloured fridge, a bold light fitting or a set of brightly-hued bar stools.
  • Don't forget the style power of a coloured tile or statement marble on your splashback. It takes up a good portion of your kitchen's total surface area and is a highly visible spot that can work as a bold highlight in your kitchen design.

A Balnei & Colina kitchen renovation specialist can work with you to add the perfect pop of colour to your kitchen renovation.
