Do Design according to your specific storage needs

Allocate your new wardrobe space to reflect the volume of clothes and accessories you own. You should include double-height hanging space if you own many full-length dresses. Shoe obsessed? Shoe racks or custom shelving will be a priority inclusion for you.

The team at Balnei & Colina suggest, as a general rule allowing for two-thirds of hanging space to one-third of shelving or drawers in a wardrobe renovation, although we adjust the ratio depending on needs. If a client has a lot of footwear, we skew toward shelving.

Shelves and hanging rods that can be raised or lowered give the wardrobe more flexibility as your storage needs change over time. This flexibility makes them attractive to potential home buyers if you plan to put your house on the market.

Strong, bright sunlight will damage clothes and accessories, causing fading and cracking over time. If the only spot for your wardrobe falls in the path of direct sun, consider enclosing your wardrobe with cabinetry to extend the life of your clothes.

Keep your clothes aerated and fresh with adequate airflow, especially if the wardrobe is next to an ensuite. While this comes down to effective space planning in the design phase, you can also avoid musty, mouldy clothes by not overfilling the racks and regularly rotating and washing pieces.
